Are their any words of wisdom on getting the Visas. Is it best to go to the office directly or is through the mail just as safe, certainly more convenient for us. How long will it normally take to get it back.

In our experience, getting visas are pretty straight-forward. When you send in the necessary forms along with the "bona fide" letters, and the passport, the Indian consulate/embassy generally turns them around in a few days. But make sure you send them by (traceable) overnight mail - and pay to have the passport returned the same way! The entire process from start to finish takes about a week.
